As we stated earlier, a loose diamonds color is an important thing to consider. In the below image notice how there are several distinct color groupings made.In the most general sense D thru F colors are considered colorless loose diamonds, G thru J are known as near colorless and K-M are diamonds that show some color depending on the cut aspects and if the particular stone has any fluorescence.
If your Jewelry taste is for white gold or platinum designs, we advise you to go no lower in color than I or J color (see above image), but the decision is entirely yours. Otherwise the lower color of the stone may reflect off of the white metal and highlight the loose diamonds off white color. When you have a limited budget for loose diamonds, one option for you to consider is getting a lower color and placing it in a yellow gold design. Another time where your choice of color is important is when you want to create your own diamond ring or anniversary ring (3 stone ring) with more than one stone. In this case, picking colors that match is critical. You should try to keep the loose diamond colors the same or at the very least one color shade apart.
When you need a bigger loose diamond or a higher clarity stone, going lower on the loose diamonds color grade is a way to save money. If you want to get a white gold or platinum setting, you can get a color as low as I or J.But if you don't have the budget for J color, or don't want to go any smaller, go lower on the color by buying a loose diamond with some fluorescence.
Fluorescence does not necessarily affect a loose diamond's value, and it is listed on a loose diamond certificate. If a diamond is J/K/L or lower on the color scale, fluorescence in a loose diamond can actually make the stones color look better than it actually is!
Fluorescence almost always makes loose diamonds look better in overall color appearance. In fact the excellent high-color of Russian loose diamonds which were highly publicized during the last two decades have a higher percentage of fluorescence in the medium-to-strong blue range than loose diamonds from other sources, which is one of the reasons they look so good. Fluorescence is a trait that is greatly misunderstood. It's often perceived by members of the trade and consumers as a negative trait, but a lot of the time it's a positive one! Here we see that buying a loose diamond with some fluorescence is a good way to save on color.
