Loose Diamonds are mostly known to people as gemstones used for decorative purposes notably in jewelry. Its ability to disperse light in a variety of colors is considered among its major features. Since loose diamonds popularity became widespread in the 1900s, experts studying gems (gemology) formulated ways of classifying loose diamonds and other gemstones based on their important values. Loose Diamonds are normally appraised by the Four C's - carat, clarity, color and cut.
Loose diamonds carat is a measure of weight to determine the mass of a loose diamond. One carat means one-fifth of a gram or 200 milligrams. Point units are used for loose diamonds which are less than one carat. As for its value, the price of a wholesale diamond is directly related to its carat weight. However, in most cases, the demand is also a big consideration. For instance, demand is usually higher for diamonds weighing a little more than a milestone compared to those weighing just a little less. The price of 0.95 carat loose diamonds, therefore, may be lower to that of a 1.05 carat loose diamond due to a different demand for the two.

The cut of a loose diamond signifies its shape and polish from its original rough form up to the final finish as a gem. It is the cut of the loose diamond that shows the quality of workmanship and its angles. In judging the angles and length ratios, mathematical guidelines are followed in cutting the loose diamond to cause a high dispersion of light. These guidelines are normally used in the most common round loose diamonds. It took hundreds of years to develop the right techniques in cutting loose diamonds. Mathematician and gem enthusiast Marcel Tolkowsky achieved the best strategy in 1919 when he created the round brilliant cut. He determined the ideal shape to disperse light when a loose diamond is seen from above. This round cut features 57 polished faces - 33 on the crown which spreads light and 24 on the lower part which reflects light back.

A loose diamonds color is also a very important factor in grading the quality of a loose diamond. A perfect wholesale diamond is transparent with no color. However, experts say there are no perfect loose diamonds in the real world as chemical impurities and defects in the crystal lattice can affect the gem's color. A diamond's value may also depend on its coloration. Most white loose diamonds with yellow color are said to be sold cheaper than those with dark pink or blue colors. Loose Diamonds that are used as gemstones are usually transparent with minute tints or what they call white diamonds. Nitrogen is considered the most common chemical impurity that causes a yellow or brown hue. A color rating system recognized worldwide has been formulated by the GIA for white loose diamonds. The highest rating is D being colorless while Z is the lowest for loose diamonds having a bright yellow color.

A loose diamonds clarity refers to the measurement of internal defects or inclusions of a loose diamond. These inclusions may be small whitish or cloudy cracks or crystals made of a foreign substance or another loose diamond crystal. The diamond's clarity can be affected by the size, color, number, location, orientation and visibility of these defects. To measure a loose diamond's clarity, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and other groups have come up with grading systems based on those defects that can be seen by a trained professional when a loose diamond is seen from above and magnified ten times. High clarity grade wholesale diamonds are rarer these days since only about 20 percent that are mined are good enough for use as a gemstone while the rest are used in industrial applications. . Every wholesale diamond sold at A&W Diamonds is certified by an independent lab for cut, color, clarity, and carat size.
